Day 4 - The Magi

Rasool Berry

Wise men still seek him.

“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Matthew 2:2 (ESV)
Today's Passage – Matthew 2:1-12 (ESV)

Check the weather. Pack the gifts. Feed the camels. It was an epic road trip. These magi – or wise men – decided to experience for themselves the fulfillment of prophecy whispered in their youth. They could barely believe it but all the signs, written in the skies above, pointed to one irrefutable truth: The Messiah had come!

The magi, renowned for their insight, journeyed for hundreds of miles in search for this Messiah. And these men actually asked for directions! “Where is he?” they asked. “We saw his star and came to worship him”. Remarkably, though they weren’t religious, their desire to encounter the truth set them apart from the rest in the story. It also led them straight to Jesus. They asked questions and left their comfort zone to find truth.

When they finally saw him, they gladly offered the most famous Christmas gifts ever. Gold. Frankincense. Myrrh. Interesting that the wisest men are known for what they gave during this season, not what they got.

Reflect

  • How did the magi show their commitment to learning the identity of Jesus? What questions do you have that could help you discover and experience the identity of Jesus?
  • What gifts, time, talent or treasures might you offer to experience encountering Jesus?

Prayer Moment

Take some time to ask God to make you more like the wise men from today's teachings.

Check out this hip-hop track written about the magi that is called Wise Men. It's one of my favorite holiday songs.
